What to Eat in Latvia

Premium Dining on Every Tour

Latvia dishes will almost always feature rye bread, whether on the plate or as an ingredient. This country’s cuisine has many Balkan hallmarks like pork, smoked fish, and root vegetables such as carrots and potatoes.

It’s no slight to Latvia that dark rye bread is a cornerstone of Latvia cuisine. Called Rupjmaize, this traditional bread is uniquely sour and sweet and pairs well with cheese.

Pelēkie zirņi ar speķi is one of the Latvia dishes that locals consider a national staple. This Baltic pea soup also features onions and speck for a hearty winter meal.

If you want a Latvia food that’s a true Latvian specialty, try sklandrausis. This root vegetable pastry tart was awarded Traditional Specialty Guaranteed by the European commission.

Did You Know?

Riga has some of the world’s finest art nouveau architecture.

Though the Art Nouveau Movement originated in Belgium, Latvia’s capital city is regarded as one of the best places in the world to see art nouveau architecture. Riga was founded in the 1200s and medieval history is still visible in the city center. However, the city’s structures underwent changes in the 19th century when a neoclassical style was adopted. Art nouveau was embraced in the early 1900s and now nearly 400 art nouveau buildings are found throughout the city.
