DISCOVER OUR ALBANIA TOURS AND TRAVEL GUIDE

Visit Skanderbeg Square and statue, the Orthodox Church of Albania, Et’Hem Bey Mosque, Tirana Clock Tower and more.

Albania gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912, yet so much has changed since that cities like the capital, Tirana, are young in many aspects. On an Insight Vacations Albania guided tour, you get an opportunity to explore a city that, while rooted in history, is cool, contemporary and creative, too.

Venture into the streets of the “new” Tirana with a knowledgable local guide who will show you, through their expert eyes, why the capital is a keystone in the Balkans. Expect smiles, waves, and well-wishes as you cross paths with friendly locals en route to landmarks like Skanderbeg Square, the city’s central square.

Spend the night in Tirana and tuck into a mouth-watering dinner that serves as a feast for the eyes as well as your palate, on just one of our many premium dining experiences. Peruse the menu for staples in Albania cuisine like byrek, flia, and Fërgesë Tirane as you learn about many other great things to do in Albania when exploring the Balkans.

What to Eat in Albania

Premium Dining on Every Tour

Albania cuisine is naturally reminiscent of foods you’ll find elsewhere in the Balkans, though this country does have its hometown hallmarks. You’ll find common Balkan byrek and qofte alongside Albania dishes like flia, petulla, and kashkaval.

Ballokume is a simple, sweet Albania food from the city of Elbansan. Called a “Summer Day cookie” due to its traditional appearance at Summer Day festivities, the ballokume is available year-round.

When it comes to Albania dishes, tavë kosi should arrive at your table at least once during your trip to Albania. It’s a baked casserole-like dish made with lamb, rice, and yogurt.

Of course, you must order Fërgesë Tirane in Tirana, a staple in Albania cuisine taking its name from the capital city. Baked cheese and sauteed vegetables create a hearty baked dish that pairs perfectly with bread.

Did You Know?

Tirana is a “new” city, architecturally speaking.

Albania’s capital city is younger than many European capitals. It was founded in the 17th century by a Turkish general, who established a town to encourage people to travel to Albania. Tirana officially became Albania’s capital in 1920 and the city was replanned. By the 1950s, the “new” part of the city made Skanderbeg Square the center. The “old” city is now, still retaining its historic architecture, considered north and east of the square.
