What to Eat in Australia and New Zealand

Premium Dining on Every Tour

Australian and New Zealand cuisines are markedly different thanks to their unique indigenous and aboriginal histories, as well as the endemic species found on each island. However, look to the dessert case and you’ll find crowd-pleasers for both.

Anzac biscuits are sweet, buttery rolled oat biscuits that derive their name from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) of the Great War.

It’s disputed whether Australia or New Zealand created pavlova, but both countries keep this meringue-based dessert close to their hearts – across each country you'll find a variety of different sizes, fillings, and toppings, though fruit and cream generally feature.

Yet another treat found on Australian and New Zealand menus is the Boston bun, also called a Sally Lunn by the Kiwis; this large spiced bun is slathered with coconut icing and served with a cup of tea.

Did You Know?

Oceania is the world’s smallest continent.

Although many people label Australia as a continent, it’s actually part of the Oceania region. Oceania is effectively all of the insular areas between Asia and the Americas, which includes Australia, New Zealand, Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia. Europe, the second-smallest continent on the planet, is approximately 1.5 million square km larger than Oceania. Oceania, however, isn’t the least populated continent; that title belongs to the third-smallest continent, Antarctica.
