What to Eat in Denmark

Premium Dining on Every Tour

Denmark cuisine reflects the best bounty of summer and whatever else is available during the colder months. Expect rich flavours of herbs and spices on everything, from Danish hot dogs to the rye bread “stjerneskud” topped with seafood.

Smørrebrød is an easy option thanks to the endless combinations of these Denmark dishes. Open-faced sandwiches on rye bread can be topped with virtually anything, including frikadeller (Danish meatballs).

Stegt flæsk med persillesovs is the national dish of Denmark, as voted by locals. This fried pork belly plate is a classic Denmark food served with potatoes and parsley sauce.

Traditional fish cakes, or “fiskefrikadeller”, are an old staple of Denmark cuisine. Served with a remoulade sauce and typically made with cod, they’re available as both entrees and appetisers.

Did You Know?

Denmark’s flag is the oldest continuously-used flag in the world.

At over 800 years old, Denmark’s flag, the Dannebrog, is the world’s oldest flag that’s been continuously used. Meaning “cloth of the Danes”, the flag’s white cross against a red background was used during European crusades before reportedly being adopted by the Danes in the 13th century. Look at the flags of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland, and you’ll recognize similar designs that took strong inspiration from Denmark’s national symbol.
