Spain
Spain is a captivating year-round destination, rich in culture and history, and blessed with diverse landscapes. From the sunny beaches of the Mediterranean to the northern green hills, immerse yourself in flamenco dancing, indulge in delectable tapas and explore charming villages. All these options make Spain one of the best places to visit in Europe in summer.
“For me there’s nowhere quite like Spain,” Emma, an Iberian specialist, tells us fondly. “No matter how many times I visit I see something new, it never ceases to impress. While, keeping cool in the summer in Spain is perhaps an oxymoron, Northern Spain is a great summer destination. While it can still be hot, the temperatures are not as high as in Andalucia or along the eastern coasts around Valencia and Barcelona. The north encompasses the Costa Verde—the Green Coast—running through the region of Asturias, showcasing a glorious coastline of lush vegetation, the Picos de Europa mountains, and sandy beaches.
“If you are heading south, be prepared for the heat by bringing an umbrella—after all, that’s where we get the word ‘parasol’ in English! Wearing natural fibers like cotton or linen will help your body breathe in the heat, while the narrow streets of the old towns are designed to keep the sun’s rays out as long as possible during the day.”

Portugal
Though an increasingly popular holiday destination, Portugal is still somewhat a hidden gem of Europe. With its warm climate and friendly locals, it’s an ideal destination for travelers seeking a blend of relaxation and adventure, making it one of the best places to visit in Europe in summer and spring.
“Portugal has some sensational spots to visit, it really should not be overlooked,” says Emma. “Lisbon, while small compared to most other European capitals, has its own charm with its hills providing plenty of opportunities for walking. The culinary scene reflects Portugal’s historical voyages east, showcasing dishes like pork and clams in a typical ‘surf and turf’ style.
“Don’t forget to indulge in the famous sweet custard tarts, Pasteis de Nata, especially from the renowned bakery in the Belem district, where they’re called Pasteis de Belem. Take half a day to explore outside the capital by visiting the chic seaside resort of Cascais with its shell-shaped bay and limestone cobbled streets, where local fishermen and wealthy residents mix in the cafes and restaurants. Inland, you’ll find Sintra, where poets and writers have drawn inspiration from its mystical atmosphere.
“Further north, Porto is a city filled with extraordinary views. From the Vila Nova de Gaia side of the Douro River, you can capture the UNESCO-listed area of Porto with its colorful houses and tiled facades. Walk along the top of the Dom Luis Bridge for a great photo opportunity of the port warehouses and river views toward the ocean. This can be accessed either on foot or via a short cable car ride from Vila Nova de Gaia, which is a lovely experience in itself. For a spectacular sunset view, I recommend you head to the top of the Porto Palacio Hotel on Avenida da Boavista.”
Lisbon is older than Rome: Lisbon is the second oldest capital in Europe, 400 years older than Rome.
France
France is a captivating destination with a profound historical legacy that is reflected in its architecture, art and culture. From the Eiffel Tower to the cobblestone streets of Montmartre, every corner tells a story,
“I’ve lived in France (off and on) for seven years in the 1990s and have explored all over the country, both as a Travel Director and personally,” explains Emma. “You’ll be blown away whatever time of year you visit, but in spring you’ll find it a particularly charming destination.
“France offers glorious beaches along both the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, rolling fields and vineyards, as well as spectacular mountain ranges including the Pyrenees and the Alps. In Spring everything comes alive with flowers, bustling markets and a joie de vivre unique to this beautiful country. Every city overflows with history, culture and art, complemented by delightful food and wine that showcases the region’s unique flavors.”

Italy
Italy has it all – architecture, culture, art, opera, literature, film and fashion. Sensational any time of year and even more so in the glinting sun. From the great cities of Rome. Venice, Florence and Naples, to the stunning coastlines of the Amalfi coast and the islands of Sicily and Sardinia, there is romance and charm at every turn. The hard question is where in Italy to go?
“Sicily is on my travel hit list as I’ve recently been developing and updating our tours there,” explains Emma, “I’d love to take a long vacation there myself next spring! It’s such a stunning sight, Mt. Etna dominates the skyline on the eastern side of Sicily, and I’d love to explore the volcano area.
“The island is a big draw for anyone due to its melting pot of cultures — Arabs, Spanish, Greeks — reflected in the cuisine. In Palermo, I’ll be trying street food, sampling cannoli, and enjoying granitas around the island. A fabulous year-round destination, we’ll be starting winter tours to Sicily as well in winter 2025/26.”
Albania
A key travel trend we’re seeing for 2025, seasoned travelers are increasingly looking for new experiences and seeking out ‘destination dupes’ that offer all the magic of the European icons (such as France, Italy and Spain) without the costs and the crowds. This is further demonstrated by +120% increase in monthly searches for ‘destination dupes’ according to Google search data from July 2024.
“Now is the time to visit lesser-known destinations – before they catch on and the crowds arrive!” says Emma. “You could swap traditional destinations for the up-and-coming Albania, for example.”
Albania is an intriguing destination that remains relatively undiscovered by tourists. With its stunning mountains, crystal-clear waters and rich history, this small country surprises visitors at every turn. Its stunning coastline along the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, feature beautiful beaches, and its mountains provide a breathtaking backdrop to every day. Not to mention the great cuisine and warm hospitality—making it one of the best places to visit in Europe in summer and spring, and a must-see on any travel bucket list.
“Traveling with a reputable touring company is an excellent way to discover new destinations,” says Emma. “We’ve spent the time selecting the highlights, and can provide access to hidden gems, ensuring you discover the best experiences possible. With premium hotels right in the heart of the action, you also know everything you need to see is on your doorstep.”

Scandinavia
“Scandinavia is fantastic, friendly, and fun,” says Emma, “and travelers are really starting to notice – we’re seeing it top the list as one of the top tending destinations of 2025. In the summer, it’s warm but not overly hot, keeping the greenery vibrant. Scandinavians embrace an outdoor lifestyle, making the most of the warm months, so you’ll be spoiled for choice for activities.
“I love exploring new cities, and our new tour for 2025 Northern Capitals perfectly showcases the culture and contrasts of the four great Scandinavian capitals – Oslo, Helsinki, Stockholm, and Copenhagen.
“Head to trending Scandinavia before everybody else gets the memo – it’s definitely on my bucket list!”
Ireland
“The lush landscapes of Ireland are perfect for staying cool – it isn’t called the Emerald Isle for nothing; its freshness lasts all year,” says Emma of the increase in demand for ‘coolcations,’ another leading travel trend for 2025. As travelers are starting to shift away from the increasingly high temperatures of traditional European summer destinations, more people are exploring ‘coolcations’ in various European countries. At Insight Vacations, we’re seeing a rise in 2025 bookings for Finland, Denmark and Ireland.
“The warmth of the Irish people is renowned worldwide, and for good reason. Step into a pub, and you’ll soon be chatting with locals. Short distances between towns allow more sightseeing time, with beautiful gardens, history and traditions.”
Eastern Europe
Though maybe lesser known than their more westerly neighbors, the jewels of Eastern Europe shine bright in spring and summer. Spectacular countries including Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland offer the perfect getaway, mixing various climates and cultures.
“Eastern Europe is the curious traveler’s paradise” advises Emma. “Home to the cultural behemoths Prague, Budapest and Vienna, whatever piques your interest, you’ll find it in abundance on our multi-country tours.
“Covering many destinations in one trip, longer journeys such as The Bohemian and Highlights of Eastern Europe offer a unique and memorable taste of Eastern Europe. Each packed with premium experiences and delicious dining, they make the perfect spring or summer vacation.
