Fall-Good Factor: 12 Best places to Visit in October

by | 26 Jul 2024

October is a truly remarkable month to travel. The Saxons’ word for this time of year was ‘Wintirfyllith’, literally meaning ‘Winter full moon’, as it heralded the first full moon of the winter season. For many of us in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s when the seasons go through their most dramatic change. By now summer has fully faded, giving way to the golden colors of fall. Leaves start falling and crunching underfoot, and temperatures significantly drop. It’s also a time of year when the world transforms into a traveler’s paradise. October is a splendid time to explore, with cooler temperatures, breathtaking foliage, and often far fewer crowds in some of the world’s most interesting destinations. Plus, there are plenty of places to go for sun-seekers looking to extend their summer – if you know where to look. Here are the 12 best places to visit in October, as researched by our travel experts.

The states of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts offer some of the most vibrant displays of autumnal colors in the whole of the northern hemisphere. Take a scenic drive through the countryside, visit Acadia National Park, hike in the White Mountains, and enjoy a cozy stay in a quaint B&B. Don’t miss the chance to pick apples and savor fresh cider – quaint and characteristically autumnal things to do at this time of year. Oh, and if you pass through Vermont, note all the maple trees afire with blazing rouge colors during the fall. They’re really impressive; it’s no wonder that Vermont produces more than half of all the maple syrup made in the United States!
